Blanca Mesa is a freelance writer living in Miami.

Blanca Mesa is a Miami-based freelance writer specializing in health, environment, and real estate and urban planning issues. She writes a column, “Going Green,” on environmental issues for Biscayne Times, a monthly news magazine. Her articles have also appeared in American Planning Magazine and National Parks Traveler. 

Ms. Mesa is a former Miami Herald staff writer and editor. Her coverage included reports on the environment, agriculture, real estate, historic preservation and urban planning. 

Over the years, she has been an active community volunteer in environmental and historic preservation issues. She has served on the boards of several non-profit organizations, including Dade Heritage Trust and the Sierra Club, Miami Group. Past community boards and volunteer activities have included the Mayor’s Miami-Dade Library Blue Ribbon Task Force, and Lawyers for Children America Guardian Ad Litem.

Recent Accolades 

  • 2015: Ms. Mesa was honored by the Urban Environment League with the Dan Paul Award for Public Waterfront Protection. 
  • 2016: Named “Best Citizen” by Miami New Times for her advocacy on behalf of Miami’s natural environment. 
  • 2017: Named “Best of Miami” by Miami Today newspaper, for her environmental work in the community.
